Self Care Routines for Natural Glowing Skin: Simple Morning & Night Steps

Embrace Natural Skincare Routines for Glowing Skin

For years, I’ve been crafting natural skincare products, and I’ve learned that the most significant improvements in skin health don’t come from miracle ingredients. Instead, they arise from consistent, simple routines that align with your skin’s natural biology. Let’s explore a practical and uncomplicated morning and evening skincare regimen designed to enhance your skin.

The Importance of Routine Over Products

Your skin operates on its own schedule. Throughout the day, it endures UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors. At night, however, it shifts gears into repair mode; collagen production increases, and its natural barrier works to heal itself. Research indicates that the skin’s internal clock actively regulates collagen synthesis, meaning that restorative processes are far more effective at night than during the day. By creating a routine that caters to these two phases, you’re not just applying products—you’re collaborating with your skin. Picture it like nurturing a garden: morning watering and evening mulching are both essential, and neither step can substitute for the other.

Your Natural Morning Skincare Routine

The morning is all about preparing and protecting your skin for the day ahead.

Step 1: Gentle Cleanse or Rinse

Contrary to popular belief, you may not need to cleanse your face every morning. If your skin tends to be dry or sensitive, a simple rinse with lukewarm water could suffice. After all, your skin has been at rest overnight without exposure to external elements, and over-cleansing can damage the skin barrier. If you feel you must cleanse (especially if you have oily skin), opt for a gentle, low-foam cleanser free from sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol.

Step 2: Hydrating Toner or Mist

This step is a personal favorite of mine. A light, water-based toner or a refreshing rose water mist can prepare your skin to absorb the subsequent products better. Rose water is not just delightful but backed by research for its anti-inflammatory properties, helping to soothe and calm the skin. You can either spray it directly onto your face or apply it using clean hands—no cotton pads are necessary.

Step 3: Optional but Lovely Light Serum

If you prefer using a serum in the morning, this is the time to focus on hydration and antioxidants. Vitamin C is a classic choice for sun protection and skin brightening, although it can be a bit sensitizing for some. Alternatives I love include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid Serum: This ingredient draws moisture into the skin, and it’s best to apply it to slightly damp skin for maximum effect.
  • Bakuchiol: A gentle, plant-based retinol alternative, it’s a great choice for daytime.
  • Squalane: A lightweight oil mimicking your skin’s natural oils, suitable for all skin types, including oily ones.

Step 4: Moisturize According to Your Needs

Not everyone requires a heavy moisturizer. If you’ve already used a hydrating serum or facial oil, your skin may not need additional moisture. When choosing a moisturizer, stick to those featuring simple, recognizable ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, or plant oils, while avoiding mineral oils, silicones, and synthetic fragrances.

Step 5: Sun Protection

This is essential. SPF is the most scientifically supported method for preventing skin aging. Studies have shown that daily sunscreen usage results in significantly less skin aging over time compared to those who apply it infrequently. Opt for a mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients rest on the skin’s surface, which many find to be gentler. Ensure your product is vegan; some mineral sunscreens use carmine in tinted options, which is derived from insects.

That’s it—five straightforward steps that can be completed in ten minutes or less.

Your Natural Evening Skincare Routine

While the day is about preparation, nighttime is when your skin enters a deep repair mode. Your evening routine should focus on cleansing the day away and providing your skin with beneficial nutrients.

Step 1: Remove Makeup or Cleanser

If you apply SPF or makeup, consider a double cleansing method in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup and SPF. A gentle jojoba oil massage is an excellent, skin-friendly way to remove makeup. Jojoba oil closely resembles human sebum and is well-tolerated, even by acne-prone skin. Follow this with a gentle water-based cleanser to eliminate any remaining residue. If you don’t wear makeup, one gentle cleanse should be sufficient.

Step 2: Tone and Balance

You can repeat your morning toning step if you wish. Witch hazel (make sure it’s alcohol-free) is a wonderful evening option for its astringent and antibacterial properties, supported by research showing its ability to reduce harmful bacteria on the skin. However, proceed with caution: many commercial versions include isopropyl alcohol that can strip your skin over time. Feel free to skip this step if it doesn’t suit your routine.

Step 3: Incorporating Active Ingredients

Evenings are ideal for applying ingredients that enhance cell turnover or require protection from UV rays. Consider the following:

  • Bakuchiol: A study indicated this ingredient is comparable to retinol in reducing fine lines without much irritation.
  • Rosehip Oil: Known for its naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid, rosehip oil has demonstrated significant benefits for reducing wrinkles and UV-induced spots.
  • Vitamin E: This powerful antioxidant supports skin barrier repair, and a little bit can go a long way.

You don’t need to incorporate all these options—choose one or two that meet your skin’s current needs.

Step 4: Facial Oil or Night Moisturizer

This is where you nourish and seal your skin. Evening is conducive to skin repair processes, making this the perfect time to support it with nourishing actives. Some stunning options include:

  • Rosehip Oil: Excellent for anti-aging, scarring, and uneven skin tone.
  • Argan Oil: Rich in vitamin E, this oil is particularly beneficial for dry or mature skin.
  • Evening Primrose Oil: High in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), studies indicate it significantly enhances skin moisture and elasticity.
  • Frankincense Essential Oil: For its skin rejuvenation benefits, adding a couple of drops to a carrier oil can be effective. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil at a 1% ratio for safe facial application.

Step 5: Eye Care

The area around your eyes is more delicate and doesn’t necessarily require a separate eye cream unless you prefer one. A tiny amount of argan or rosehip oil gently patted (not rubbed) under the eye using your ring finger works perfectly.

Step 6: Allow Time for Absorption

Give your skin 10-15 minutes to absorb everything before you lay down on your pillow. Using a silk or satin pillowcase is worth considering. Silk is shown to create less friction against your skin and hair and also retains moisture better than cotton, allowing your serums to stay on your face rather than soaking into your pillow.

Don’t Forget Your Body

While your face often gets the spotlight, your body also deserves a nurturing routine. After showering, apply body oil or lotion while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture effectively. Jojoba or argan oil are both excellent body oil options. Pay special attention to areas like elbows, knees, and heels, which tend to be drier due to fewer oil glands.

Simplifying It: The Minimalist Approach

If all of this feels overwhelming, you can start with a truly minimal routine:

  • Morning: Rinse, moisturize or apply oil, and SPF.
  • Evening: Cleanse and apply oil or moisturizer.

For many people, this minimal approach can be enough. Your skin doesn’t require ten steps; it needs the right ones done consistently.

Recognizing Skin Changes

It’s important to understand that our skin evolves due to various factors—hormones, seasons, stress, diet, and sleep can influence what your skin craves on any particular day. For those in perimenopause or menopause, estrogen levels fall, affecting skin texture and moisture. Studies show that collagen levels decline post-menopause, necessitating richer oils and consistent hydration during this period.

Always listen to what your skin is trying to tell you. If it feels dry or tight, introduce more oils to your routine. If you’re experiencing breakouts, simplify your regimen.
